Payment Systems Architecture Review

PAYX was engaged by one of two major ATM processors in Canada who process for over 600 Customers nationally. PAYX conducted an extensive architecture and operational review of their payments business. The organisation operates as a major multi-party payment processing organisation utilizing an acquirer front end and a custom retail banking solution as the back end. The focus of the review was to assess the effectiveness of the current operation in terms of people, process and systems, making recommendations on the strategic direction in which the business and the infrastructure should evolve. Both short-term cost saving benefits and longer-term capability to expand existing and enter new markets were highlighted. The final report was delivered in two sections; the first provided an outline of short-term measures that could be implemented over a nine-month period that would result in multi-million dollar savings annually. The second consisted of recommendations and an approach to extending the existing architecture by integrating, at low risk, new technology and operating components. The resulting platform would be positioned to extend the company’s offering to its existing service base and provide direct entry into a number of new areas. A number of projects have subsequently been initiated and PAYX has provided key implementation resources to fast track the delivery of the early benefits.

Business enhancement through Web Enabling of legacy payments infrastructure

A large regional oil company located in Eastern Canada retained PAYX to review their existing proprietary fleet card strategy. The review recommended innovative technology to empower the fleet card operating businesses. Real time links were to be implemented between fleet companies and their fleet card usage, delivering a strategically powerful, lower cost and more efficient business model with lock in loyalty features. PAYX was commissioned to assemble a team to undertake the design and implementation of the solution. The project involved multiple stakeholders across the organisation as well as major fleet customers. On a technical level, the project involved the integration of Internet, Universal Data Access and RDBMS technologies with an existing legacy payments switching system, an Oracle fleet billing system and a Web Server. A unified web interface was designed and built providing data access to the payments and billing databases, as well as implementing the payments transaction processing functionality. The program was implemented as specified at less than half of the costs previously estimated by other software companies which utilized more traditional and less innovative approaches

E-Commerce Payment Card Fraud Study

A US payments product company retained PAYX to undertake a study on Internet Commerce Payment Fraud (ICPF) and recommend mitigation strategies.  Extensive research was conducted internationally to understand the dynamics of ICPF.  The focus of the study was to provide recommendations that would identify the most effective means internationally to manage fraud exposure which could then be turned into software products.  The final report highlighted a number of areas of exposure with the most critical one for this client being the inability to authenticate the payment initiator.  The study articulated a framework for the introduction and utilization of a range of existing and new expert decision systems/products and neural network pattern recognition systems as part of a comprehensive fraud management program.
